Newsletter December 2007

This is the last newsletter from the Feminist Archive (South). In January 2008 we are moving from Trinity Road Library to the University of Bristol where, job done, we shall be a permanent collection. The building has been sold and we are packing up. There are just a few weeks left before we move into temporary storage. After the end of January the archive will be managed by the trustees and Bristol University Archivist Hannah Lowery.

I am writing to say thank you to everybody who has helped in any way to make this archive the successful venture that it is. The archive was begun in 1978 and for thirty years it has been run entirely by volunteers. This is a massive achievement. There are nearly 2000 books and a similar number of pamphlets, at least 800 different periodical titles, over 1000 posters, and a great assortment of conference papers, newscuttings, badges, banners, postcards, music, film and ephemera. As the last volunteer at the archive I just want to acknowledge and admire all those feminists who have helped in any way. Thank you for whatever contribution you have made, for whatever research you did, for whatever lists you made, for donations of books and papers, for encouragement, for putting up shelves, for your ideas and memories and action......

Some of you have said that you still have donations of materials to make. Well, there are still about 7 weeks to go! And even after that, donations will still be gratefully accepted, and added to the collections in store. Please contact us by email via http://www.bristol.ac.uk/is/library/collections/specialcollections

I am happy that the archive has a permanent home at the university. I am happy that feminism is alive and well. There are young people out there promoting their ideas by internet. This archive website has already been archived in its own right! The next generation of archives will not be on paper. But the second wave of feminism has been recorded here, at least in part.

Thank you everyone and we send seasonal greetings and good wishes for a very happy new year.
